Fifth Grade Life Science
Comparing Living Things
It may sound easy, but sometimes it can be hard to tell whether something is a living thing or not. Once scientists determine if something is alive, they classify it with other living things that have similar characteristics. The most basic level of classification (taxonomy) is the Kingdom. Most of us are familiar with the plant and animal kingdoms, but in class, we will talk about the other 4 kingdoms (moneran, fungus, archea, and protist) as well. There are some links below that will help you explore these topics further.

Reproduction and Change
Reproduction is when organisms make more of their own kind. For a single celled organism, this often only takes one parent and the offspring is identical to the adult. For most multi-celled organisms, reproduction requires 2 parents. The offspring gets half of its chromosomes from each parent which allows it to have a mix of their traits. We can use Punnett squares to predict the likelihood of various traits in offspring based on their parents' traits. Organisms often have adaptations that help them survive in their environment. If the environment changes, the favored traits may change causing the population to change over time. Below are some links that will help you explore these topics further.

Adapations
Living organisms have natural variation in their traits. When one trait is better suited for life in a certain environment, the organisms with this trait are often able to live longer and produce more offspring with the favorable trait. If a new variation occurs in the environment, a new trait may become more favorable and be spread through the population. When a population is not able to adapt to changes in the environment, it runs the danger of becoming extinct.
